For the dads who always show up

Peter Michalski wasn't the patient. But he was part of every moment that mattered.

With any premature birth, everyone always asks about the baby.

They ask about weight, complications, milestones, and test results.

Who they don't always notice is dad, just outside the hospital room. Carrying the bags, making coffee at 5 AM, answering tests. ... Trying to hold it all together.

This Father's Day, we're celebrating the dads who quietly carry more than most people ever see. Peter is one of them.

When his daughter Magdalena was born extremely premature, Peter and his wife Elise suddenly found themselves in emergency delivery, followed by a NICU admission and an uncertain road ahead. At the same time, they were caring for their eldest daughter, Zosia, just 18 months old.

Between hospital visit and sleepless nights, Peter was balancing two very different worlds: one in the NICU and one doing everything he could to make sure Zosia still felt the joy and rhythm of toddler life at Ronald McDonald House.

While Magdalena fought to grow stronger, Peter worked just as hard to preserve a sense of normalcy for her big sister.

He quickly found a routine.

Each morning, he would stop by the dining room for breakfast, two coffees, and an oatmeal with bananas - Zosia's favourite. It was a small ritual, but on the hardest days, it helped life feel a little more normal.

He used the business centre at our House to take calls and keep things moving. He know where to find an extra blanket when Elise needed one, and where to take Zosia when she needed space to run, play, and simply be a toddler.

In fact, some of Zosia's biggest milestones happened right here at Ronald McDonald House - her vocabulary expanded exponentially, she became a social butterfly, and she loved helping staff whenever they could use a tiny pair of hands.

"Ronald McDonald House gave our family stability during the most difficult time in our lives."

Most of all, Peter was able to focus on being Magdalenda and Zosia's dad.

Not a chauffeur.
Not a hotel guest.
Not someone figuring out where to sleep or how to make everything work.

Just Dad.

Looking back, Peter says what he remembers the most isn't the fear. It's the moments in between - sharing meals, watching Zosia discover something new, and closing the door at the night knowing his family could finally be together.

This Father's Day, we're celebrating the dads who show up day after day for their kids - often quietly, often without recognition, but always with unwavering love.

To every father, grandfather, stepfather, and father figure in our Ronald McDonald House community: thank you.

Happy Father's Day!
